i found a 6-12volt automatic battery on line,it says it is for starting only on the 12-volt,and then swaps to 6-volt to run everything else. are these reliable,thanks

what do i need to change in the 6-volt system to go to 12-volt

i would like to keep it all original,is there a place to find a used or rebuilt 6-volt? when i do get it to run(very,very slow cranking) the engine runs perfect,took me 3-weeks to get it to run,generator and gauges all work perfect. i know it's cheaper to find a starter,previous owner said the start...
