Filled exhaust crossover

My heads, which I bought finished up, have the crossovers filled with what looks like a grout/mortar type stuff. Since this will be a street motor, I'm looking for pros/cons of leaving it as is or removing it. Obviously cold driving would be better with them cleaned out but is there a possibility of...

Ordering Custom Pistons

Machinist has OK'd the block for a 4.060 bore(60 over on a 392) but he wants pistons in hand before he bores/decks. I'm not finding forged shelf pistons at that oversize so looks like custom, I think I'll go with Ross on the recomendations I see here and elewhere. But Ross will need alot of specific...

Re: Knurlizing Pistons?

I can understand how acid would remove the rust itself, but won't there still be pitting? Its the pits and scores that are really at the heart of the matter.

Re: Honing

I've decided to go with new forged pistons in .060. Depending on how much block decking is needed might have to go custom. I'll find out when the machinist calls me. I dropped the block and crank off last week. To tell you the truth, money was a part of the issue and I was getting antsy to get somet...

Engine building info

For any that's interested I found this site...

http://www.tomorrowstechnician.com/

I hope its okay to post the link. The tech articles are written in easy to understand language(well, most) so even I could wrap my head around it. Snoop around, its informative.

Should I sell my good heads?

I have two sets of 392 heads. 1) completely prepped with extra large intake and exhaust valves and race springs, exhaust crossover filled, tube seals, etc., milled to 97cc chambers. Could get 10.5:1CR with shelf forged pistons but they would need valve reliefs enlarged or get custom forged pistons 2...

Well, this guy did it..

Early A's have tight engine bays. those pics give me hope!

From the guy's description it wasn't an insurmountable task. Just address each issue.

Re: Dart Swinger, hemi swap

I'm doing something similarish. 392 into a 66 Dart granny-mobile. I haven't gotten to the nitty gritty of making it fit, I'm still trying to acccumulate engine parts. As far as stuffing the beast in the bay, from what I've read and seen the 73 would be easier than the 66, your engine bay being a bit...

Re: just when I swore I'd never buy another 331

Only we hemi nerds would understand how a couple of rusted ugly hulks could be something to get excited about, ya know? I remember decades ago trying to hunt down Desoto hemi parts. Good luck! Then we found a 56 Desoto, buried in a municipal junkyard. Spent a few hours with a come-a-long til we pull...

What's the acceptable tolerance for cylinder out of round and/or taper? Street motor. I haven't been able to find it in the literature.

>maybe I'll send one out and get the extension cut off, and adapter welded on- and cut down a 392 crank and drop it in, and build a short rod 392<

I see Wilcap has several adapters listed for the extended bellhousing blocks. I'm no expert but they look bolt on.

Re: vacum or mechanical? choke or no choke?Hello

If yours is a street car, where you have all kinds of different loads and conditions i think you'll find better driveability with an electric choke and vacuum secondaries. While its true you could adjust opening time on mechanical secondaries you know you're going to put your foot all the way in it ...

Re: Honing

Its a 392 with a previous .040 overbore. I hope you're right about cast rings, as I have them in mind for another reason...less bore wear. With your pistons being new, you have the option of selling them and putting the $ towards another new set of whatever size you'd need after boring. I see new an...

Thought I'd seperate this from the piston knurling thread. Well, I'm a little puzzled but a little hopeful too. As I mention in the other thread I'm trying to see if I can reuse my Jahns forgings by honing out the rust and scores. Today I honed one cylinder as a test. I still see some scoring and ru...

Re: Not the hemi tick. Please help.

If you're concerned about the bottom end you should be able to quickly rule out a spun rod bearing. Turn the crank til the piston is halfway down passed TDC. Stick a pushrod or similar thru the sparg plug hole til it touches the piston. Push down. If it moves you've got a spun bearing. Don't ask me ...

If you ask why go thru the trouble, it becomes a rhetorical question. Why make anything when its easier to just go out and buy its commercially available equivalent? Wanna go fast, buy a fast car. Easy. If you're a hands on type of guy, its because it just doesn't suit you. You enjoy turning wrenche...

Re: Knurlizing Pistons?

I hafta admit, cost is a factor in exploring reusing my pistons. When I first looked at the motor to buy it I automatically figured on a rebore. But the more this recession goes on the farther away hemi parts become. I have my own business and its gotten pretty crappy in the 6 months since I bought ...
