Re: Heads..which would you do?
I guess you agree!! Not much "overthinking" with the Surfers. You have to remember back then 392s were in every wrecking yard on the west coast. My only comment is when I was growing up in the 50s & early 60s, I don't recall EVER seeing a car with 100,000 miles on it. Oil back then did...

Re: Heads..which would you do?
I started reading your questions beginning with this post to those from about a year and a half ago. Is there ANYTHING you know about engine assembly? I never have encountered such drivel in my life. Pay someone to put the thing together & use it. You are way over thinking this !!! It's just a m...

Re: 291 assembly questions
You started at the wrong end to verify your correct/incorrect (?) bore. Measure the pistons FIRST, add that to the manufacturers recommendation of clearances for the pistons SECOND, then measure the bore in your block THIRD. The first two numbers added together should be the third number, bore size,...

Re: '54 #1486833 331 heads on '57 392
"the trick was to give the gaskets a light coat of VHT brand 'high-heat' aluminum header paint on both sides and then install the gaskets" I have seen this done on countless engines over the years and I have ALWAYS thought the same about the process. It is PAINT, not cylinder head gasket, ...

Re: Sealing girdle to block
I just got off the phone with Paul at ARP. I assume all those reading this is aware they are the leading fastener manufacturer in the free world. He said that the main bearing bore POSITIVELY need to be align honed if studs are used in place of bolts on main bearings. The bearing clearances WILL cha...

Re: Aluminum 4BBL intake for low deck DeSoto
I would kinda like to hear the flow characteristics on these converted intakes. Or maybe a few numbers from a dyno pull with a 2 bbl. intake, a 4 bbl. intake and a converted 2 to 4 bbl. intake. I have removed several 4 bbl. setups on street driven trucks and EVERY ONE had better throttle response, i...

Re: Sealing girdle to block
The clamping force of a stud is more than a bolt setup. I have always align honed or align bored the mains in a motor that I converted to main studs. The distortion ain't much but it is there !!!! Not worth the thought of a burned bearing not to spend the money for a little more machine work. Buddy

Re: Crazy idea, timing gears
I stand corrected !!! There is an industrial timing set on eBay with the big ( spelled real HEAVY) two piece front cover and what looks like a reverse rotation gear set. At least you would get a cover you wanted that could be removed without removing the pan. Maybe you could get the gears under an a...

Re: Stroking the 392?
After you consider the cost of the 440 rods, the trouble and expense of preparing them for use, trusting the work is done correctly, the Mallory Metal thing adding all this weight, the welding/grinding crank work, why not contact Crower or Manley, to name two, and just order the set you need? They w...

Re: Chromed Rocker Shafts
I think the primary reason for getting new/rebuilt shafts in the first place is because the originals were worn out. If you gotta buy new why not upgrade? T.R. has them in stock for about the best price you can find. I would start my search there. Just make sure the rockers are in good condition ins...

Re: Crazy idea, timing gears
I think I have seen the belt drives advertised on eBay that fit the small block Chrysler and 392 motors. I would think they would be the ultimate setup BUT about four Milodon gear sets could be bought for about ONE belt drive. Those things are in the stratosphere for cost, around $1,300.00. I forget...

Re: Valve Springs
At this point the valve length is not the most important thing to worry about. If you just want to measure them it is the total length from the tip to the top of the head. The assembled height, the distance from the bottom of the retainer to the spring seat is what you need to check. It should be 1....

Re: Valve Springs
I forgot to add I looked the springs up in my Crane catalog. They are listed as being for flat tappet or hydraulic with a recommended seat pressure of 120 @ 1.875.. They don't give spring rates but calculating it with the same method & their info gave 391#/inch. They should work fine. The only t...

Re: Valve Springs
Check the Summit info on the springs and get the listed spring rate, the pressure the springs go up in 1". If you cam has .500 lift, divide that spring rate by 2 and add the new amount to the original seat pressure. . Or you can figure the spring rate from the info you have now. Springs are 120...

Re: 331 "W" Block limits
I wanted forged pistons to be able to run a blower without worrying about the pistons coming apart. Since I have to buy them new I decided to get the size that would be the least expensive to get rings for. Other reasons are that the upgraded piston designs now being employed are far superior to old...

Re: 331 "W" Block limits
That is the idea. Get a ring that is cheaper to use. Stock replacement 283 rebuild ring sets are about $20.00. Even the moly sets are less than $50.00. I did not price the 1/16th-1/16th-1/8th sets because the motor is going to be blown. The wider rings should be a little better at sealing the boost....

I have the sonic check completed. The block is THICK !!!! It could probably go .125 over with no problem. If Scott will send me a fax number I will send the results to him and he can post the numbers. I think I am going to order pistons with a 283 Chevrolet std. bore size of 3.875 or an LS1 bore of ...

Re: 331 "W" Block limits
I have a 331 poly engine that I bought complete from a 56 Chrysler. It has the W on it. I also have a 354 W block that has the W. From the looks of the pushrod holes it was a poly motor. The 331 I have in the machine shop getting sonic checked was a poly block and has the W. It appears that the W is...

Re: What Temp should 392 run at normally?
Put a shroud and fan if you have the room. I installed a 460 Ford in a '48 several years ago and it had two of the biggest fans available. I had to squirt water continuously on the radiator to keep the temp down to 190 while running the motor for 30 min. at 2000 to break the cam in. It just would no...

Re: 54 331 Hemi Oil Bypass Removal
That was going to be my suggestion. Take the rear main off and see if there is even a bypass in it. I finished a 331 marine engine a while back and it did not have a bypass. Is your block a marine version or just an early 331 as another reply suggested? I feel that is the answer to your problem. Sin...
