Let me start by saying that there are no answers set in stone... BUT, it is generally accepted knowledge, backed by Chrysler part manuals that the 57 motors were 9.25 : 1, and that the 58 motors were 10.0 : 1 compression. Any horsepower differences within a specific year were due to changes in intak...

Here is what it looks like to me. 1957 had three 392 engines. The first listed as NE57, 325 hp with single 4bbl used in NYer. The second is CE57, 325 hp, single 4bbl, used in Imperial. The third is 3NE57, listed as 375 hp, 2x4bbl carbs, used in the 300C, which would include solid lifters and 4 bolt ...

My listing shows the VT344 as a 241 in hemi or a 259 in a poly. The numbers for a 270 start at VT346.

Here's my .02. First, are you sure its a M that you have? I have owned a couple 354 truck motors which were painted yellow. The no name valve covers also suggest truck. The casting numbers from block and heads would help.

You will need to use the two tapped holes in the intake to plumb to a remote thermostat housing, which Weiand also makes, part # 7134.

For a front cover, I would suggest one of the cast units from Hot Heads, which include the adapter for a sbc pump.

Welcome to the board. The casting number on the block should along the side of the valley cover, between the cover and the head. The casting numbers on the heads are under the valve cover, in the center of the head. If yours is not an extended block, then yes, the bellhousing bolt pattern is the sam...

Ok..I did the math. 1st..... we are talking stock 354 motor bored to use 4.0" 392 piston. 1: rod length is not a factor. (in this case) 2: the compression will be affected by stroke, not rod length (in this case) 3: given that the 392 piston designed for 10:1 compression using a stroke of 3.90 ...

Marine Blocks

I am sure someone can answer this for me. Are the marine blocks structually stronger than a car or industrial block? Is there any advantage to using one? Thank you.

You will notice that the crank on ebay is a welded up and offset ground 331-354 crank, not a 392 crank. :o

As said, you may want to get hold of someone like Jr. Thompson. From what I understand tho, even the old race cranks were built up from stock cores.

My advice would be to find another block. You will be farther ahead. At that point, you will have a choice of transmission options, not to mention lighter weight.

Sorry I dont have much to offer on this, other than the distributor shaft is longer on a 331 than a 276.

You will also need to cut the rear main seal surface to 331-354 size, along with having the counterweights turned down. Its a very expensive way to get a few more cubes. I know. It would actually be less expensive to start with a 392, even for what you would have to pay for one.

Yes...what HE said. Excellent book. If you dont have it already, buy it.

What year 331? You may want to look into purchasing your parts seperately, vs buying someones kit. There are more than two companies that can supply you with early hemi parts.

Not completely positive, but as mentioned, I think the change was around 61. The reason the later ones cannot be bolted up direct is because Chrysler shortened the rear of the crankshaft that extends out the rear of the block around 61 or so.
