I think you will find paint such as Krylon Dull Aluminum to be a pretty close match.

hemi marine paint

You can give Harold Barnett a try at plynut@aol.com. I know he just bought a pair of marine 331's that he's parting. Maybe he's got something with good paint on it.

Just to expand on Centerline's comments, the early hemis are great engines. I would just be careful not to have it built by someone who likes to build every engine like a sbc.

Bore

Actually, you would have to bore a 331 out .125 to reach the 354 bore size.

I have yet to see/hear what the 5.7 hemi has for a bellhousing bolt pattern. My understanding was that it was different than current smallblocks. Now...if it was the same as the Viper...your question would be answered

259 dodge

What makes this interesting is that Tex's book does not list all the engine numbers, and some are incorrect. My book lists the vtx342 as being a 259 poly...not a hemi, and available in trucks. From what I can tell, there were no 259 hemis built. This is not to say someone didnt build a hemi from a 2...

overbore

As stated, the only sure way is to have the block sonic tested.I definately would have a 331 car block tested before boring to 4". The later 331 truck blocks that I have had appear to have very thick walls. In fact, the 354 truck motors used the 331 block castings. I am currently building a low...

early A body/hemi

Aside from what motor you may have, I can tell you that this is not a wise first time swap. Unless you are good at fabrication, and have the necessary tools and equipment, you are better off to build yourself a nice smallblock for the car. Having talked with Mopar Charlie about his Dart/hemi swap, a...

I have researched this myself. The problem is that the Chrysler engine design has the left (drivers side) cylinder bank ahead of the right side bank. The Fords are the opposite, right ahead of left.

Dodge hemis

The Dodge motors are smaller, but do have the same bellhousing pattern as the Chrysler hemis. With my adapter you c an mate to a 727, 904, 518 automatic or 833 four speed. The problem with a Jeep transplant would be the transmission. If you have questions on my adapter or any of my other products, f...

They will fit, but compression will be less than 10:1 due to less cyl volumn with the shoter stroke.

354 ?

There are two schools of thought here. #1 : there is no replacement for displacement.
#2: Nothing looks like a hemi.

It all has to do with your application and personal preferrence.

This is not the first 55 331 I have seen that was used as an industrial. Doing what research I have, it seems alot of car engines were used in industrial applications. I would dare bet that the engine in the picture also has a hyd cam, putting the myth of "all industrials are solid lifter engin...

I talked with Skip at the Street Rod show this last fall in Essex, Vt. A very nice guy. I know there still seams to be quite a few of the early extended block trans adapters out there for sale. With a little time and patience one could be converted as stated to use a latter trans. I am thinking I sh...

extended block adapters

One of the problems with using an extended block with a modern trans is that, as far as I know, you still need to use the early hemi flywheel and starter. I have done a little work on designing an adapter to use an 833 behind the extended blocks using a late model flywheel and starter. I am still in...

Industrials

I too have noticed that an engine having humped industrial valve covers does not necessarily mean its got a solid lifter cam. My guess is that Chrysler got too many complaints from owners having to worry about valve adjustment, as some of these ran near continously in the field.

Recently I read an article, with photos, of some newly developed hemi heads to fit the current smallblock Mopar blocks. These were developed to use in the nostalgic drag classes. If this is actually the case, there would be little need to retool for early hemi blocks. The fact is, the early hemi an...

56A is a 354. wish you were closer, I would be interested in it complete. But being an industrial, it would not be worth the cost of shipping the whole engine.

Water outlets

There are a couple ways to deal with the water outlets. Most, and I say most aftermarket intakes have a threaded (1/2 pipe) hole to the water jackets between the first and second port on the intake /head flange. You can plumb from there forward into a Weiand remote thermostat housing. (Part # 7134)....
