The 236 is the engine type. When the engines were modified for various adaptations, with a particular combination of accessories, it was designated by a seperate model and type number. The type number was used to identify the motor if parts were needed. Different types included those used in farm equipment, stationary power units, pumps, etc.
The IND56 is indeed a 331.
