Industial with No Serial stamp?

Post by DaltonMasterson »

I have scraped in front of the valley pan, and have no stampings there. Where else can I look to decode my engine? I am new to hemis, and actually a diehard Ford guy, so take it easy on me.
It is an Industrial hemi with a propane setup. According to one of the sites I was on, if there is an inch between the water crossover and the intake, its a 392? Is that right? I didnt see 392 Industrial data anywhere.
Have photos posted here.
Thanks http://s103.photobucket.com/albums/m152 ... G_0381.jpg

"The File You Are Looking For Is Inaccessible" from your picture.

They never made a 392 industrial Hemi, that is why there is no information on one.

I was pretty sure they didnt make a 392 Ind, by the lack of info, but its all kind of confusing. I updated pics. Should be 3 total. Can take more if needed.
Didnt answer the serial # problem, tho. Can I decode using casting numbers. If so location of head #'s etc?
Good website with breakdown of locations? I dont want to tear it down yet, as I have other projects first, but would like to start gathering the parts as I go.
Also, are 331, 354, 392, etc, valve covers, intakes, and basic bolton parts all interchangeable? thanks. DM

Looks like an extended bellhousing 331.

Call Leo and get his little manual for all your other questions and interchangeability. It will more than pay for itself when you start to buy replacement parts.

There will be a casting # between the head & vally cover, pass. side rear. But that is a 51-53 "long tail" 331.

This engine has the extended bell however the heads have the water crossover ports like the 55 and later engines. Wonder if they just used a leftover early block with the later heads or maybe someone upgraded the early engine at a later date? Just curious....

Sorry guys, the bellhousing that bolts on to the engine goes all the way to the distributor. It is just hard to see in the pics. It is square along the back of the engine. I did find a data plate behind the left head tho.
Model IND-56A
Type 2 36
Sn# 15798
Ok, so its a 354 according to the plate, but what year? 55 or 56? Thanks. DM

There were 56A ind engines sold new through the early 60's, Flying Tiger Air Freight service used them up until the early 2000's for backup generator service, worldwide. Many small towns used them in the same manner.

56A engines were 354 inch motors not extended bell motors.

Thats what I said, but is there a way to tell the year by the info, or do I have to delve into the casting numbers. The intake/right head one is not visible either. Thanks. DM

Casting number would all be the same serial number could give you a hint on when it was produced. Serail number would be on the data tag.
