'03 Ram 1500 Quad Cab 4X2 Hemi, gets driven around the L.A. area, mostly city driving with a few open freeway runs. Currently getting around 12.4 mpg. The miles are at 3400, and I've noticed the mileage is gradually getting better over time. It was 11.7 at 1500 miles. The mileage jumped about .3 mpg after installing a bed cover, maybe due to that or maybe just getting broken in more.

I know it is not a Hemi, but my Chevy started to get
its best mileage after the odometer rolled 30,000. :)

More KM per tank

Post by Johnny »

:D I travel about 200 km to work and was getting 13mpg on the highway, doing about 115km/h. On days off I put in a K&N filter and a Helix TBS, now the trip is about 15.4. The truck is a 3/4 ton quad cab with 3.73 gears. Hope this helps.

Hemi mileage

Post by jamesmcmichael »

I have a 2004 1500 short wheelbase/regular cab. With a touch over 2000 miles on the truck, I get 15.3 - 15.6 around town and 18.7 on the highway. The above figures are on Shell 89 octance; also, the truck is on Mobil 1 oil with a K&N air filter. I have an ARE bed cover ordered, and I expect highway mileage at 70 w/cruise to exceed 19 MPG. I'll let you know.

OK. Just turned 2600 mi., around town is 15.5 mpg. First hwy trip was 20.1 mpg. That was driving 5 mph over the posted speed limit, or 70-75 mph.
Truck is a 2004 reg. cab short bed, 4x2, Hemi. I have a peragon bed cover, K&N filter.

Man, I dont get sh--! Granted only have 1300 miles on mmy 04 but I havent seen anything better than 12.5 using 87-91 Octane. She also seems pretty sluggish around 25-40 mph. My remedy is coming in a few days though. JBA headers, Volant cold Air Intake, Magnaflow muffler and in April I get my Superchips programmer. My mileage should go up a little and Im sure to have quite a few more tourqey ponies to feed.

Mileage Tips

Post by amxracer1968 »

IF you haven't purchased a truck with a Hemi yet, order the 3.92 gears, especially if you want the 20" wheels.

Don't believe the onboard mileage computer, it is out to lunch.

Hemis like to rev. Considering the power band is around 3200 up, it WILL NOT make decent mileage down around 1500 r.p.m. so...shut the overdrive off unless you are REALLY cruising.

In Calgary, AB (3800 feet), I switched to REGULAR gas.

The combination of shutting the o.d. off and using Regular gas instead of Mid-Grade, easily bumped the mileage up by a full 120 km (80 miles), per tank; in around-town driving. Switching to Regular has the net effect of bumping the timing ahead by a few degrees (it really helps).

I learned a LOT about the Hemi engines, having owned a 426 for a number of years.

Don't get discouraged by low power or poor mileage just yet. My truck really changed at 5,000 kilometers and again at 10,000. Something the factory did with their computer systems (altering timing) for break-in I was told by a knowledgable Mopar service manager.

2004 4x4 1500 quadcab; hemi, 35,000 km (around 20,000 miles), 20s, 3.92 posi; NO mods.

I guess I'm luckier than most. I bought my 04 2500 quad with auto and 3:54 limited slip and immediately drove it home more than 500 miles at 80 MPH plus. In town (sea level, panhandle of Florida) I am getting 15 MPG, towing a 2k trailer and 4k car, I get 12MPG. Empty on the highway, I get 16-17. This shows on the trip computer and is confirmed by manual calculations

I went on a 2 1/2 hour trip this weekend to Charleston, SC. I ran the cruise control all the way on the way down, and got 17.2 at 75 mph. On the way back, sitting in traffic much more, I got 17.7 with the cruise off running 80 mph. Mac cold air, flowmaster side exit exhaust and a bed cover are my only mods. I have gotten over 19 on my way to work doing 65 mph.

I only wish I could see 15, 17 and I seen someone on hear claiming 20! I just rolled over 4500 miles and with my 24 gal tank I have yet to get 300 miles. 12.5 has been the best avg I ever seen.

04 QC, 3.92s, Volant CAI, Magnaflow, waiting on headers and Programmer.

If I do about 71 or 72 I can get about 19 or 20 MPG on the NYS Thruway. If I push it up to 75 my milage drops. City forget it, but I don't blame the truck, no sir. I blame the the four traffic lights in a row all within 200 feet of each other. when one turns green the next turns red, you HAVE to stop at every one of the lights.

I agree

Post by giddie »

I agree with roblh, some of these numbers are outstanding. I have made the same 280 mile round trip (all highway) more times then I'd like to remember and the best I managed was 16 mpg. That was keeping at the speed limit and on stretches of road that were relatively flat. If I drive normally that number drops to about 14.7.

Just posted this on the other Fuel Economy Thread...
2004 Rumble Bee 4x4 Here, 2000 miles. Just took a 500 mile trip 95% interstate at 70-75mph and averaged 18.0 MPG. Bucking major wind on the way back it got 16.6........ Right now it's 100% stock, cold air intake is on its way, we'll see what that does.
I had 90 octane w/10% ethanol in the tank for the trip.
I have been gettin about 13MPG city milage.

04 Durango Hemi mileage

Post by carzrus »

We purchased the 04 Durango limited,Hemi, 4x4 with traction control and the 3:55 rear anti set up. In our last trip to the Gulf Coast (1250 Miles)we got a MPG at 18.8 at 75-85 MPH running with the traffic on the interstate. It would seem that the 80-85 range on cruise yeilds the best mileage on a stock unit. My overhead console now shows 17.6 after getting home and traveling over 300 additional miles, our Durango has just a tad over 10k now. :)

I have seen a max of 18.4 mpg while on flat highway, in 85 degree
weather, with the A/C on.

I have K&N air filter and Magnaflow exhaust. on a 2003 ram 1500 2wd
regular cab SLT.

Keep in mind the way you all read the MPG mode on the computer.
It needs to level out, and the reading you get while going uphill, or
accelerating will not be the absolute MPG amount.
Read your owners manual-or better yet, the Dodge service manual
about how exactly this feature works, before deciding you have
poor fuel economy.

One other item that is very important is that you HAVE to reset the
computer (press reset twice)- before being able to obtain a relative
reading. This is also in the manual.
