05 5.7 Swap in 73 charger (power steering questions)

I have a 73 charger that I am trying to use the stock stering box. I wouold like to use the power stering pump that came off the doner motor instead fo trying to rig up the old power stering pump on the new hemi (that would look weird). the motor is out of a 05 2wd rumblebee. I was told that the 73 charger steering box can handle 1200-1300 psi but I am not sure what the output pressure is of the hemi pump. I want to avoid the cost of doing coil overs with rack stering. anyone out there can help me with this issue. I think I have the rest figured out.

The 5.7 pump should work just fine. I'm swapping a 2003 Dodge Ram 5.7 into my 70 Cuda and did some research on this. Everyone I've talked to who has done this swap has had no problem with compatability between the hemi pump and the older steering boxes.

Hi,

Just sent an e-mail to Street & Performance (Mena, Arizona) to see if they know anything about this type of problem. If they get back to me, I'll post the results on this 'site for all.

They're probably going to tell you that you need to buy their $200 pump! A post on another Mopar site that someone made about having to use S&P's pump is what originally got me started researching this. As I've said, I've talked to a couple of different guys who have already done this swap and had no problems using the 5.7 pump with the earlier steering box. I also talked to a techline guy at a supplier of rebuilt pumps for Carquest and got the specs on the early pumps and the 5.7 pumps. There was only 50 psi difference in the working pressures between the two! Not enough difference to make me believe I need S&P's pump, so I have the stock 5.7 pump hooked up to the steering box in my 70 Cuda. I haven't got it running yet 'cause I'm still waiting on the #$@%* manifold from XV Motorsports (4 months now)!

Thanks for the info!!!! I dont think my steering box has ever been rebuilt so I was going to try it anyway. I guess now all I have to do is figure out the connections from the new pump to the old box. Where did you get your hoses make up or modified.

Thanks for the update on S & P and their pump solutions. There is another 'site that I'd say give them a call, or e-mail: Firm Feel Inc.

If you haven't heard of them, they deal in Mopar high performance steering for Mopars, along with suspension up-grades.

The link is to their 'site. Contact them and see if they're up and running on this one.

Hope you get a positive response !

The return hose is low pressure and I just used a reducer (3/8" to 5/8") hose barb fitting to splice the hose from the reservoir to the steering box. On the high pressure side I cut off the factory hose that came on the pump to the appropriate length and had a new fitting crimped on the end to fit the steering box. The fitting was a 3/8" hose barb X 5/16" 45 deg. Inverted flare with a 45 deg. bend. Hope this helps.

Hope you all get this before you jump in at the deep end !

I got a reply from Street & Performance on the Hemi steering pump question. This is taken straight from their e-mail reply:

"When doing that swap use a GM pump which is 950PSI. Hemi pumps put out 1350PSI which is to much PSI. The 5.7 Hemi pulley just need to be bored larger for the GM shaft. The pump is same otherwise. If you can't do it we can do it for you."

Hope that helps everyone.

Is there an information page where this info can be logged for future reference ?

Mike

I talked to Jason with CJR Products in NC (336) 766-2710. He is a power steering pump tech for them and rebuilds the crysler pumps to 1250-1350 PSI. the new Hemi pump is at the top of this range. he did not know what the pressure was of the new Hemi pump but confirmed that the stering box can take 1350 PSI. he said that he has actulay adjousted the pumps to put out up to 1500 PSI for these rock crawling jeeps. What Jason wanted me to do is send him the new and old pump and he would bench test them to see what the differeence is and make the new pump match the pressure of the old pump. I am tempted to do this just to know and should get him to back the pressure to about 1100. he said it would be about $25.00 shop fee pluss shipping charges. I know the sterring using the old pump provides no feedback. probably due to the pressure the pump puts out. I would imagine that you would get a little more feedback if the pressure was lower. For me I have been drvign this car for 13 years with different motors in it and like the feel. Just feels like MOPAR steering. this project is getting out of hand as far as cost so I am going to give the new Hemi pump a try. If anyone can actualy confirm by personal exsperence that it will blow the seals out then I will do the S&P thing. my box probably needs to be rebuilt anyway but it doesnt leak so have no reason to tear it down. I will let everyone know how it goes.

I personally swapped a 5.7 from a 04 ram 2500 into a Jeep cj7 and I can tell you that for whatever reason, the power steering pump has overheated within 10 minutes of the vehicle running everytime. This could have happened for a few reasons.

1) The pressure generated by the pump is too high and the fluid is heated up as it is recirculated into the reservoir via the relief valve.
2) The return line has collapsed due to the high vacuum pressure generated by the pump causing cavitation, and subsequently air in the pump, causing heat.
3) I still have air in the system (doubt it).

I plan on swapping out the (Newly replaced) hemi pump for a power steering pump out of a 1998-2004 Jeep TJ. It will bolt right up, and produces less psi. I will keep you posted on how it works out.

Okay, got an update on my swap. I got my 5.7 running and have been driving it around for a couple of weeks now. At first I had a little leakage around the sector shaft seal and the steering shaft seal, but I wasn't surprised as this steering gear box has sat since I bought the car 8 years ago and who knows how long before that as the car didn't have an engine in it when I bought it. I put a little brake fluid in the power steering reservoir to soften and swell the seals (a trick an oldtimer showed me years ago) and the leaks appear to have stopped. I feel the leaks were due more to the seals being old and dry than to the higher pressure of the hemi pump.I did pick up a new seal kit just in case though. The power steering is working just fine with the higher pressure, and I don't see any reason for changing to a different pump. I've experienced no problems with power steering overheating, and have had the car out for up to an hour at a time both in town and on the highway. At this point the factory pump is working great, and I gotta say that this is one sweet running hemi!

Man, thats awesome. I also heard that they were too high pressured to run on the stock gear box. I think the info came from Street and Performance. I guess its worth a try.

FYI: I got 2 steering gear boxes from 80s Diplomat cop cars, they are firm feel boxes and are a really great upgrade. They even sell them new at Autozone for about $150. A friend of mine bought one for his Challenger about a year ago.

Great thread.

Any more info on that jeep tj pumping pressure J?

FWIW: I just got a 03 5.7 that I'm putting in a 70 Challenger.

If anyone is interested, there's a feature on steering pumps in the January 2009 issue if Car Craft Magazine.

The article's based around the steering box's used by GM, such as Saginaw, but the information included there-in is good, along with the contacts.

Chargoholic,

what stock hoses fit? After two moves in 3 years, I'm finally getting my car running and am having a heck of a time getting the correct hose built. Heminut used the 5.7 hemi hose and crimped on a fitting to fit the gear box. But what stock hose are you talking about?

Thanks,
Chris

Wow! Four and a half years since I got the 5.7 running, doesn't seem like it's been that long! Just an update on the power steering pump issue. After all this time I'm still running the factory 5.7 pump with my 70 steering box. I've had no issues whatsoever, leaks or anything else. I see absolutely no reason to go to the added expense of switching over to a lower pressure pump.
