Hemi Cam in a 440?

Post by 383Dart »

I saw picture of a 440 on a website once. It was of a 440 on a dyno stand, and the caption below said Hemi cammed 440. How would this work? I thought Hemi cams had different lobe patterns, if this truly did work what kind of power gains could be expected?

B/W: I've seen hemi cams in 440's with the Stage V conversion.

Different valve sequence

Post by macx »

The hemi's had a different valve sequence (int, exh, int, exh, etc)
and the 440's have like exh, int, int, exh, etc so don't see
how a hemi cam could run a 440 - you'd have intake lobes
opening exhaust valves & vice versa, wouldn't you?

Hey, I was kind of zonked when I answered, just thought maybe
I was not thinking clearly or missing something.

I knew people used Hemi cams in 40's when they had the Stage V
hemi head conversion but not that I could think of otherwise.

I guess those heads fit on regular B blocks, too. That must really
make a hi rpm screamer for the cubes!

Yeah the Stage V Hemi conversion is minus the secret 5th headbolt, so they bolt onto B or RB blocks. Theres a guy at www.bigblockdart.com who has a 67 Dart with a 542 Stage V Hemi RB that runs 11's with a 3.54 a 2200 RPM stall some sort of high performance tires. Come to think of it I think its Steve Magnante's car.

Chrysler used to market hemi-grind cams for the wedge engines. They had the right lobe pattern for the wedge but had the duration and lift of the hemi cam. I am guessing that is what they are talking about when they say hemi cammed.
