Hemi Heads

Post by brightb »

Is it possible to just have Hemi heads and put them on a block that is not a hemi block? What would be the problems if it couldnt be done?

Well, depends on what the heads are from and what block you are using. Lets say you were putting 426 Hemi heads on a 440 wedge block. Naturally you're going to want a good .030 overbore, and sonic check it and align hone it and deck it and everything. You would have to ensure that every thing that could go wrong with an engine block doesn't. The bottom end will be of paramount concern, you will definately want crossbolted mains. In a true high performance build 426 Hemi heads made 18,000 lbs of vertical seperating pressure at 7,200 RPM. Wants you have done everything possible to ensure the blocks stability you would need to weld threaded "bungs" in the oil valley so you could cynch down the magic 5th headbolt. The valley would also have to be clearanced for the change in pushrod angle. Its not easy but its not impossible. Its actually be cheaper to buy the stage V conversion kit and call it a day. I was jsut trying to illistrate some possible difficulties. Hope this helps.
