Help 5speed auto
Ok here's the problem. I've been driving my new hemi for about 2 months now and just noticed that the window sticker(which was in the glove box) said optional 5 speed auto transmission. Well I'm not a rocket scientist but I'm assuming my truck only has 4 speeds. I have a 1,2,D and a tow haul botton on my shifting lever. Is that indeed the 4 speed tranny? Does the 5 speed have an extra 3rd gear in the instrument cluster. Or is this transmission actually in my truck with just no way to control all the gears its in? I'm a bit confused and just wondering if both me and the dealer have an issue to resolve.
The 5-speed auto is just that. The fifth speed is just an additional overdrive gear. If you pay close attention to the shifts, you will see and feel it. There is very little difference in the ratios for 4th and 5th of the auto though. The ratios are as follows:
1st .............3.00:1
2nd.............1.67:1
2nd Prime....1.50:1
3rd..............1.00:1
4th..............0.75:1
5th..............0.67:1
Reverse.......3.00:1
You can see that the difference between 4th and 5th is .08:1...very little.
2nd Prime is there to allow for smoother 4-2 downshifts.
Fifth gear feels more like a lockup torque converter than an additional gear.
It is frustrating that the transmission has no gear selector for 3rd. There are times where I would like to have that option.
