354 Hemi casting #1637625-2 date code 2-25-56

Post by sgtpete »

I bought a 62 plym Fury several years ago. I found a 4bbl intake in the trunk. Casting # is 1637625 with a date code of 2-25-56. Here are my questions; Is this an intake for a 56 354? Will this manifold only work with the 354? How popular are the 354's. The manifold is in VERY good condition, are original manifolds like this in demand? I'm interested in any input I can get. I am a moparaholic, but I'm not real familiar with this engine. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks! -the sarge :o

Yes, your intake cast numbers have it as a 4 barrel 1956 354 hemi. This intake will work on any early Chrysler hemi that has the water crossover to connect the left and right heads. Generally speaking these engines are 1955-1958 331,354,and 392. This maniflod will bolt to the 1951-1954 however there is no means to route water out of the heads as the early (51-54) manifolds have the water passages and thermostat housing in the manifold. Back in the day some people drilled and tapped the early heads to gain access to water and fabricated water lines that went to a remote thermostat housing thus allowing for an upper radiator hose. Hope this helps

Thanks 41 Hemi,
How sellable is this manifold? Would something like this be in demand?Certainly the 392, 354,331 are not as popular as the 426, and of course if a guy wants something "numbers correct" it would be desireable, honestly I hadn't heard of the 331 hemi until now. How many of these beasts are out there? Thanks -sarge

There are some of these manifolds on ebay from time to time however they do not get big money for them in my opinion. Seems that most people are going with the aftermarket manifolds that are lighter and have larger throttle plate holes. Just keep an eye on ebay for them to give you a basic idea of pricing.

354 intake

The 331-354-392 are 1st generation Hemis. The 392 is massivly popular with drag racers & hot rodders, the 331-354 to a lesser extent. Most of the time you get the engine alone or with a body & ditch the body. Only restorers & people trying to save a few $ want the OEM intake, most go for the lighter aftermarket intakes.

Thanks George and 41Hemi for your input. Confirms what I'm guessing. I guess for me it's nice to know that I actually have at least part of a genuine hemi for now.... maybe some day I'll find one to park under it!! I wonder if a guy can get real performance out of a 331 or 354. I know Don Garlits used the 392 primarily (correct?). I think I was born in the wrong era. About 10-15 yrs too late. :-?

All 3 can run quite nicely. Garlits started with 331s & went along as the sizes increased.
