What type of modern auto Tranny would fit a 331 or 354 '56 Desoto . Would it be less costly to get a modern auto tranny or rebuild the orginial one now attched to the motor?

It would be a 330 or 341. The tranny adaptors for the Chr. is supposed to work on Dodge & DeSoto. I'd go w a 727

Thanks for both replies. No period correctness needed or intended. Its going ina '51 Dodge delivery panel pickup. Want an auto, any idea of cost to rebuild the old orginal tranny attched to motor now Vs. cost of gear for an the newer Tranny? see the Dodge on thisforsale.com

OEM tranny is a 2 speed. You'll get better everything w a s/b 727. The adaptor isn't cheap, but what is w a Hemi!

Hmmm... I may wind up putting one of my 351-C in after all, the '51 dodge panel is channled or sits on a 80 Lincoln frame!!! So it has the motor mounts all ready. Then just get a set of the $400 buck FIREPOWER valve covers and cover it up :>) Have you've seen what they want for these covers on eBay...shheezzze maybe thats a hint of $ to deal with the old hemi (was there a song like tha?.. no, it was an Old Hippy ) well maybe I'll look at late model salavge Hemi's . Thanks ALL!!
