426 flyweel on a 331 hemi

Post by Fred G Sanford »

Has anyone used a 426 flywheel on a 331?
I have a 146 tooth one on the engine now but want to use the 130 tooth so I don't have to grind the inside of the next bellhousing.
I know I will have to have a register cut on the backside of the 426 flywheel for the 331 crank.

426 flywheel on early cranks

Post by wayfarer »

Fred, good news !! You can use the 426 wheel, but cutting a counterbore to register the new wheel on the old crank may leave the centre of the wheel a bit thin. More good news...I make a 'spacer', or call it an adapter if you like, that only moves the flywheel about 0.090" to the rear. It slips over the crank flange to register, has a small shoulder same as the late crank, and has the right ID to register a special sealed bearing for the input shaft. If your crank is out of the engine, you could also modify the flange. Have a 'very good' crank repair shop weld up the flange and then make the old flange look like a late flange. Change it to 6-bolt design and then you get to use $25 wheels... Let me know if you need more help.
