engine swap 1959-361 Bigblock to 1958 -392 hemi

Post by dodge59 »

Greetings ! My wheels are spinning again this winter. I'm thinking about pulling out my 59 dodge 361 Bigblock and installing a 58 chrysler 392 Hemi in its place. The question I have is , Will the 392 bolt onto my 59 dodge torqueflite cast iron 466 3 speed trans ? Or will I need some adapter or spacer? Both engnies have a 8 bolt crank flange. My converter bolts directly to the 8 bolt Crank. there is no flex plate in this 59year.
Any info on this issue would be appreciated ! ! :D

392 vs 361

First off, the 361 is a B engine so there is no way to bolt them up.
There were plenty of Plymouth 301, 303, and 318 assemblies so a 'flite from a 59 should be a 100% bolt-in. If you want/need, a small block TF up to '62 will also bolt-up in similar fashion but other items, ie, shift linkage, may not. The '62 model was the start of the flexplate so later units will require a trans adapter (call me, I sell 'em) Your front engine mounts will need some fussing, and the 392 passenger head will want to be where your heater box now resides. As I recall, a box from a 57-58 Chrysler should interchange.

update from a few years ago post on installation of a 392 hemi into a 59 dodge .

What a piece of cake installation !

modified the pass engine mount and got a hemi bell housing and nothing hits anywhere even the pass valve cover. Easy installation .
Thanks !
