A guy was saying that you don't need the HH F/P adaptor to use a LA pump, just shorten the arm so it clears the other side of the timing cover. Has anyone tried this?

I don't know if that will work or not, the adapter to run an LA pump on the 331-354-392 engines spaces the pump out approx. 3/8 of an inch. If you just shorten the arm and bolt it on I can think of 2 problems that might arise. One, will the eccentric still contact the arm in an acceptable location and two, since the arm will be pushed down lower is there enough travel designed in the pump to allow it to work properly with the arm in this lower position? For no more than what the adapter costs, I think I would play it safe and just use the adapter. An advantage to using the adapter is also the fact that if you are out on the road somewhere and the pump fails you can just buy another LA pump and bolt it on.

That was pretty much my thinking on it also, but just checking to see if anyone had tried it!

I wouldn't bother for a 331 or 354. A new original pump is still available from RockAuto: AIRTEX Part # 4280 for $46.79 + shipping. This is also the same pump that the poly 277 and 301 "A" motors used.
