51 to 53 Chrysler Hemis (extended bell) seem to use a different starter than the later early model hemis. I was told all 49 and 50 Chrysler starters as well as 51 to 54 Desoto Starters will work too.
Are there any others? Not the easiest to find one of these starters in good working condition.
Anyone have anything they want to sell? HA!
Thanks!
Scott

Nobody knows????? Wow....
Re: 51-53 Chrysler 331 starters. Interchange?
My understanding is this...
'51 to '55 use 6V starter (146 tooth flywheel)
'56 uses 12V starter (also 146 tooth flywheel)
'57 to '58 use 12V starter (172 tooth flywheel)
I don't think extended or non-extended changes anything.
I recommend a mini high-torque starter from Hot Heads.

And just so you know too.... if by chance you're converting
the car to a 12 volt system, you'll need to change the ignition
coil, but you can run the original 6 volt starter just fine on
12 volts.

Thanks guys! I grabbed a starter from a 55 Desoto. Looks like it's going to work just fine.
