Oil pickup repair

Post by NE57 »

I tried to post this under tips and tricks but it wouldn't let me.

One of the tabs broke on the bar that goes across the stock pickup screen. A simple fix but since I've never seen such a repair online I thought it might be worthwhile to post it anyway. I used a laser welder but it could be done by any welding/brazing method. I welded over the same location on the other tabs just in case there were unseen cracks there too. I've done similar repairs to stainless steel watchbands many times so I'm reasonably confident.

Two nice things about a laser, you don't heat the whole piece so you don't anneal the metal, and you can use the pulse to actually push the metal around. Since I had no steel filler wire this was handy in making a proper fillet.

I can't figure out why Chrysler would put that big hole in the screen that this bar covers up.
