Building a Hemi 331 ussing 54 Block and 53 Heads

Post by marcel »

I am restoring a 1953 Chrysler New Yorker Deluxe Newpot with a Hemi 331. Unfortunately the block was cracked around the water sleeve and was unrepairable. I purchased a (What I Assume Is A) 1954 Hemi 331 Industrial block . I got the complete lower block, Just missing the heads and intake on the 54 Block.( The 54 engine was used to power a generator or sirens). My question is, I have my 53 heads and 2b Intake that came with my 53 (Extended Bell Housing block), Can I use these on my 54 Block? Do I need to change out the cam shaft? Will hydraulic lifters work with my 53 heads. (It came with solid lifters but the 54 block had hydraulic lifter in them). Are the gasket set interchangeable between the two engines?

1954 Casting Number

Hope this helps :D

Your '53 had solid lifters!!?? with adjustable rockers or adjustable pushrods? Very unusual.
Your 53 parts will fit on a 54 block, no problems. Use the hyd lifters. Caution here...verify the size of the pushrod tip vs lifter. Your hydraulic lifters will have a 0.125" radius seat.

What do you plan to do to 'fix' the trans bolt-up problem?
