I know it may seem odd to ask,but is it a solid or hyd.lifter ?

They are hyd , so am I right in thinking that it's just a case of taking up the play , then readjusting after the lifters have pumped up ?

Most cam/lifter manufacturers will suggest 0.040" to 0.060" preload on the hydraulic lifter.
With the lifter sitting on the base circle (heel, back side, whatever) open/extend the pushrod until all slack is gone but the puck has not yet moved. Now, open an additional 1 2/3 turns (at 32tpi this gets you about 53 thou) and lock the nut.
Repeat 15 more times. Yes, it will be handy to bend a couple of end wrenches to better fit the space.

On my 331 I just snugged them, any more it wouldn't run.
