I am purchasing a 1954 331 Hemi engine to put in a 1962 Studebaker Lark convertible. The frame rails are 28.5" center to center. My question is will this engine fit in the frame?

I've been told to ask someone to hold a tape measure over the heads and measure the engine from outside valve cover edge to the opposite outside edge of the other valve cover. Anyone have that distance handy?

if you are trying to hot rod the Stud......then the answer is.....of course it will fit!!!

i do not know exact specifications but you can make any engine fit in any engine bay it just needs a little fabrication

331 Hemi Exterior Engine Dimensions:
Width = 32 1/8"
Height ( oil pan to air cleaner ) = 36 1/2"
Length ( trans mounting surface to fan ) = 36 3/4"

One thing to remember - an early hemi with headers is actually narrower than a small block Chevy with headers due to the angle at which the exhaust exits the heads. Something very few people realize.

331-354s are narrower than 392s. Around 1958 or 59 Gordon Potter put a stroked 392 with about 460 cubic inches into a 55 T-bird without to much problem. They had an article on the transplant in a 58-59 HOT ROD magazine article. Supposedly the bird ran in the 12s with the old bias tires of the day. I believe the studes had about the same room as the birds of them days. DEAN

You're correct. Due to the taller deck height they're a little over an inch wider.

While stumbling about the internet I ran across this thread and thought I'd add a couple of photos.

These were taken one night back in '69 when Gordon stopped by to talk about N02 for the car.

my car when put to the floor dies out till I let off the gas then runs again.its been doing this since plugs were changed they cant seem to figure it out at Chrysler any one please help??????? plus changed but not coils started after the plugs were changed
