The 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel I-6 in the 2016 Ram Heavy Duty Pickups makes 900 lb-ft of torque, the automaker announced. FCA claims the new torque rating is the highest of any 2500 or 3500 pickup available. The 385-hp rating carries over.

Engine updates include a “new, hard-hitting fuel delivery and turbo boost calibrations.” The revisions bump torque 35 lb-ft over the current model’s 865-lb-ft rating. Where the current Ram 3500 Heavy Duty is rated to tow up to 30,000 pounds, the 2016 model is tow-rated up to 31,210 pounds. The ring gear hardware for the available 11.8-inch rear axle has been upgraded from 12 to 16 bolts. Additionally, hardened bolts and stronger material are used for the differential case.

With a tow rating of 17,980 pounds, the 2016 Ram 2500 Heavy Duty is said to be best-in-class. A Ram 3500 with the 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 has a payload capacity of 7,390 pounds, while the 2016 Ram 3500’s Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) of 39,100 pounds is also said to be best-in-class. All Ram pickup ratings meet SAE J2807 standards.

In comparison, the 2015 Ford Super Duty’s 6.2-liter Powerstroke turbodiesel V-8 is rated 440 hp and 860 lb-ft, while the 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel V-8 in the 2015 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD pickups is rated 397 hp and 765 lb-ft. Production of the 2016 Ram pickup will begin in the third quarter and hit dealer lots in the fourth quarter of this year. The 2016 Ram 2500 starts at $32,680, while the 2016 Ram 3500 starts at $33,185.
