Viper Owners Are Crowdfunding One Last Attempt at a Nurburgring World Record
Fans are sending two Viper ACRs to the Nurburgring to try to topple the Porsche 918 Spyder's production car lap record.

The Viper ACR holds an astonishing 13 lap records at various tracks in the US, but Dodge has never taken the track-focused Viper to the Nurburgring for an official lap time. With Viper production ending this year, it's highly unlikely the ACR will ever make it there with factory backing. That doesn't sit well with Viper fans—so a bunch of them are crowdfunding a private ACR Nurburgring lap record attempt, in the hopes that the mighty snake can topple the production car world record currently held by the Porsche 918 Spyder.

Members of the Viper Owners Association have set up a GoFundMe page with the goal of sending two Viper ACRs to the Nurburgring to set a lap record. The Association is looking to raise a total of $159,000 to fund track rental, driver payment, shipping the ACRs to Germany, and other expenses. At the time of writing, a little under $14,000 has been raised.

The record attempt is receiving generous assistance from well-known Texas dealer Viper Exchange, which is providing the two ACRs free of charge. If all goes to plan, the record attempt will happen in April 2017.

Back in 2011, a previous-generation Viper ACR famously set a lap record for production cars at the Nurburgring, running around the track in 7:12.13. Since then, a handful of production cars have surpassed that record—including the Porsche 918 Spyder, which holds the current production car record with a screaming 6:57 lap. The current ACR was 1.24 seconds faster than the 918 at Laguna Seca, giving Viper enthusiasts reason to believe that the American brute could easily earn back its 'Ring bragging rights.

Viper fans see a Nurburgring Record as a way to make a bold statement as the Viper ends production. Organizing the attempt without manufacturer support is a tall order. Clearly, Viper enthusiasts are passionate enough to try regardless.
Certainly there's a fat cat Viper owner who can fund this little project for them.
