Fiat-Chrysler Files Trademark Application For ‘Cuda’ Name With USPTO

A reborn Barracuda may be closer than ever following the discovery of a new trademark filing by Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles. FCA filed to once again trademark the “‘Cuda” name on June 16 of this year.

It’s not the first time FCA has moved to trademark the iconic name. ‘Cuda has always been short for “Barracuda,” which the automaker filed for trademark two years ago in 2015. However, automakers regularly renew trademarks to protect names, even if there is no intention to pursue a new product.

But, the ‘Cuda and Barracuda rumors have been swirling for a few years. Mounting speculation points to Dodge introducing a convertible variant of the next generation Challenger, which would wear the Barracuda or ‘Cuda name and, overall, be slightly smaller. The next-generation Charger and Challenger have been plagued with delays—the latest timeframe pegging a 2020 introduction. The current Charger and Challenger are still pimping Daimler intellectual property.

When the next-generation cars do debut, they’ll most likely be riding on the Giorgio platform, which currently underpins the Alfa Romeo Giulia. While that’s good news, the iconic nameplates may have their Hemis stripped from them—reports have stated the Hemi engine is set to expire in 2019. Twin-turbo four and six-cylinder engines would instead find homes under Dodge’s hottest offerings.
If they bring the 'Cuda back, hopefully there's still a HEMI to stuff under the hood.
When people talk about twin turbo 'Cudas, they aren't talking about 4-cyl beasts...
