Pickup trucks are king in Texas, and the state played host to two new models from Ram Trucks – one of which Texans will have all to themselves.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles will offer the Ram Laramie Longhorn Southfork and Ram Heavy Duty Lone Star Silver special edition trucks at dealerships soon, the automaker announced at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas on Thursday.

The Southfork will be available across the U.S., while the Lone Star Silver is exclusive to Texas buyers.

Special edition vehicles help automakers freshen up vehicles that are functionally unchanged. Ram Trucks has been particularly aggressive on this front.

So far this year the brand has launched the Copper Sport and Heavy Duty Night trims, the Sublime Sport and Rebel Blue Streak and the Limited Tungsten Edition.

Texas is a crucial market to all makers of pickup trucks. About 12 percent of all vehicle registrations in the U.S. are trucks, but in Texas the number is about 19 percent, according to Ram.

The brand sells two-and-a-half times as many pickup trucks in Texas as it does in the second-highest state.

The Southfork is an all-new trim on the popular Ram Laramie Longhorn and will be available on Ram 1500 light trucks, as well as Ram 2500 and 3500 heavy duty trucks. It features full-grain leather seats, a walnut-trimmed steering wheel and center console, suede visors and headliner and an embossed “Longhorn” emblem across the rear tailgate.

It can be ordered with two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, in Crew Cab or Mega Cab configurations, with a short or long pickup bed.

The Lone Star Silver, equipped with a premium chrome grille and tow hooks, is being expanded from Ram 1500 light trucks to include heavy duty models as well.

Now available on Ram 2500 or 3500 trucks, the Lone Star Silver comes with two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive and a Crew Cab only. Buyers can choose from a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 engine, a 6.4-liter Hemi V8 or a 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel six-cylinder.

Pricing starts at $51,220 for the Laramie Longhorn Southfork and $44,735 for the Heavy Duty Lone Star Silver. Production of both models will begin in the third quarter of this year.

Through the first eight months of 2017, sales of Ram Trucks have increased by 4.6 percent to nearly 328,000 vehicles compared to the same period last year, according to industry research firm Autodata Corp.
The Night editions are still my favorite, I think.
