Oil leak from between head and block

Post by hemicharger70 »

Anyone ever had a street hemi that leaks oil from between the head and the block. I've had this thing apart twice and put new head gaskets on both times. Seems like it is seeping through the head gasket from the oil feed for the rockers. I'm thinking of just putting a small amount of RTV around the gasket in that area. Anyone else fixed this problem?

Real common problem on the 426 style hemi. Your RTV idea is one I have heard before and some recommend Cometic gaskets.

MYSTERY SOLVED

Answering 7 years after the OP's question.

I fought this for years. multiple tear downs, copper head gaskets, secret sealants etc.
Talked to many other 426 owners with the exact same concern.

Finally found that is WAS NOT leaking at the head gasket but at the back corners of the
intake and was running around the back of the head and dripping off of the head gasket
seams by the rear cylinders .

Sealed the opening gap at the rear intake/block/head interface with RTV and has been
dry as a bone ever since, even through subsequent tear downs etc. I have also fixed several
other 426's with the same problem/symptom.
