Whats the best set-up for a mid 12 sec. 70 cuda?

Post by Skysweeper »

Hi, i'm new on here and new to building classic muscle cars. Currently i own a '90 nissan 240sx with a turbocharged in-line 6 that i swaped in but i'm thinking of selling the nissan and getting a '70 Plymouth Cuda.
I was thinking of getting a 440 for the car or a 426. I want to be able to drive the car on the nice days and weekends and run mid 12's atleast.

Whats the best way to do this? I know Nitrous would be a easy way to run faster but i'd rather run mid 12's w/o nitrous.

Thanks for any help.

A well tuned stock hemi will just about get you to mid 12's with slicks and a well tuned chassis. If you go with a 426 hemi I suggest a good competion valve job, a MP P5007379 cam, a set of headers, no larger than 2", quick advance curve with 35 degrees of total timing, stock carbs &intake. A 10" converter, 4.10 suregrip, superstock springs. If this doesn't hit close to 12 flat you're trunk is filled with lead.
For a 440, 9.5-1 compression, MP 509 cam, pocket ported heads with competion valve job, M1 single plane, 750/850 holley double pumper, quick advance curve with 38 degrees total timing, 1-3/4 or 1-7/8" headers. !0' converter, 4.10 suregrip, superstock springs, and slicks. This will also put you close to 12 flat. Both packages should be street friendly. Good luck, Dave

The best setup for mid-12 second 70 Hemi Cuda??? Huh?? It'll run mid-12's in virtually bone stock form. Add a set of headers, do some carb jet and ignition timing tuning, some 4.11 or 4.56 gears and some 29 inch tall by 9 inch wide slicks on 7 or 8 inch wide wheels and it should run low, low 12's. You might want to add an electric fuel pump at the rear, near the tank to push fuel up to the stock fuel pump to avoid fuel starvation above 5500 or so rpm , but that's about it.

Do a bit more suspension tuning -ie- a pinion snubber, additional clamps on the front half of the spring leafs, some h.d 50-50 rear shocks and some loose, 90-10 front shocks) a bit more cam and better valve springs, more tire, some 4.88 or 5.13 gears and some tuning and you should be in the low 11's.
