Is the 276 the same block as a 331?

Post by Cirilian »

Does anyone know if the 276 hemi out of a '53 dodge desoto is the same block as a 331 hemi? Is the 331 just bored out, or are they completely different blocks? Thanks

Sorry, but they are 2 different blocks. Couple things I can think of that they share is the timing chain and gear and the bellhousing bolt pattern if the 331 is a non-extended block.

Actually the 331 is a Chrysler engine and shares little if anything with the DeSoto 276. If you were refering to the DeSoto 330 that's different. The 330 is a raised deck block while the 276 is a low deck. Cylinder heads will interchange along with some minor internal parts, such as the timing gears and chain but that's about it. Crank, pistons, rods, and camshaft are all different between the raised deck and low deck DeSotos. Your 276 shares way more parts with it's low deck DeSoto sister, the 291 than it's tall deck brothers.
