Tranny ID

Post by Hemi8me »

I have a tranny attached to one of my 330 Desoto Hemi. I would like to know what it is. I haven't found anything on the net.

On the tail shaft it has Bonnalite T530857.

Here are some pictures.

It's just a regular 2-speed Powerflight automatic. They were used an all Dodge, DeSoto, Plymouth and Chrysler cars in the early and mid 50's. The "Bohnalite" name on the tailshaft housing isn't really significant - it's simply the name of the company who made the aluminum tailshaft housing. Bohnalite was an aluminum casting company in Detroit who made all kinds of cast aluminum parts for just about all U.S auto and truck manufacturers from the 1920's through the 60's.

Thanks Mart.

How much power can these handle? Are they worth anything?

Generaly speaking, they're of value to restorers only. Most performance oriented are going to get an adaptor and have a wide choice of GM & Mopar sticks & 3/4 speed automatics to improve performance & milage vs a 2 speed.

Will the three speed handle 325 HP? That is our target for the rebuild on my S-24, 330 ci hemi. Think some of the 354's had nearly that many beans. Mine is a street machine only (F-100). Thanks. Gary
