409ci Mopar Hemi from Hinkle Performance Engines at the Amsoil Engine Masters Challenge 2014

Buck Hinkle of Hinkle Performance kicked off the 2014 Amsoil Engine Masters Challenge as our first competitor, coming to the show with Mopar’s most famous muscle engine, a hot street spec Gen II Hemi. The big Mopar was actually a destroked version of the famous 426, featuring an old NASCAR Kellogg crank with a stroke of 3.535 rather than the factory 3.75-inch, giving him a total of 409 cubes. The crank was a unit that had been in his shop for decades, and the block he got for free and repaired with eight sleeves (Buck is a master of homegrown machine work). With the Engine Masters test rpm range spanning 3,000-6,500 rpm, the short-stroke Hemi may have actually been below its ideal rev range. Proof came with peak power coming in at the very top data point recorded, showing 613 horsepower right at the 6500 rpm mark. The combination of the free breathing Mopar Performance aluminum heads, large headers, and big Indy single plane manifold all stacked the power curve towards the upper end of the range.

In the cell the Hemi sounded clean, pulling easily against the brake. The Hinkle team used their dyno session to zero in on the ideal air/fuel mixture for maximum power, trying two different Holley 4150 carbs, and dialing in the larger version with an air bleed change. The tuning yielded results, adding power across the board. As the first competitors, Team Hinkle will need to wait to see how they fare against the Engine Masters 2014 competitors to come, finishing with a score of 2502.7.
