Rare 1969 Dodge muscle car hits record-high price at auction, allegedly purchased by actor David Spade

A 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona Hemi crossed the auction block in Florida this past week for a record-high $900,000—and the winning bidder was actor David Spade according to TMZ.

The Daytona, which was part of Mecum Auction’s recent Kissimmee sale, has been described by its restorer, Roger Gibson, as “the best example of a four-speed Hemi Daytona in existence.”

The car’s body panels, engine, interior and chassis are all original to the car, save for the hood and trunk floor, and the interior carpet and headliner.

Dodge made just 503 Charger Daytonas, only 20 of which came with a Hemi V8 and four-speed transmission. While at first written off as oddballs, these rare cars are now highly collectible, and regularly trade hands for between $200,000 and $500,000 at auction.

The car was owned at one time by collector and newspaper magnate Otis Chandler, who in 1988 commissioned Gibson to take the restore the car from its then-period show car look, with custom wheels and a wild paint job, to stock livery via a no-expense spared restoration.

The car was also owned at one time by former NFL linebacker Kevin Greene; the seller, Tim Wellborn, bought the car from him in 2005.

TMZ reports the winning bidder at the Mecum sale was Spade, who famously drove a rusty, worn-out Charger Daytona replica, pictured below, in the movie Joe Dirt. The $900,000 is the most anyone has paid for a Charger Daytona at auction.
