The fully customized vintage truck started out as an easy resto project by a group of buddies.

Projects have a way of getting out of hand, taking on lives of their own and finally, eventually, turning out way different from what was originally intended.

Take the Pick of the Day, for instance. This 1954 Dodge C-Series pickup “started as a renovation project among friends,” according to the private seller advertising the truck on ClassicCars.com. “The project was intended to take one year.”

But more than four years later, what rolled out was a completely different critter, a lavishly customized pickup with both tilt bed and tilt front end, affixed to a modern frame and powered by a Hemi V8. Beautiful and functional, and worthy of any hot rod show.

“This truck has a 5.7 Hemi with a completely rebuilt drivetrain and frame from a 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 truck,” the Claremont, New Hampshire, seller says in the ad description. “The engine is fuel injected with rebuilt heads. The suspension has been customized for coil overs in the front and a parallel four link suspension with coil overs in the back. The rear end has been rebuilt, all the brake calipers, rotors, pads and wheel bearings are new as well as all the brake lines and fuel lines. Every inch of the chassis has been gone over and sandblasted and painted.

“The bed has been customized with a steel frame with a hydraulic cylinder to make it a dump bed. The front body (hoods, fenders and nose) has been customized to make it a tip-forward front body feature to fully exposed the engine compartment and the original gullwing hood panels are also functional.”

The seller goes on about the LED turn signals and taillights, as well as the dual exhaust poking out of the customized rear end. Yet also how the effort was made to keep the vintage Dodge looking correct and not too in-your-face.

“The customization of the outside body panels are subtle to keep the basic look of the original 1954 pilot-house-style truck, but with the stance and closeup viewing to make it obvious this truck is all custom, and all Dodge,” the seller notes.

The interior has been tricked out with modern features to make the truck a comfortable driver. The photos with the ad show an attractively well-finished pickup that looks like the show winner that it is.

“The truck has taken first place at a local car show in the truck division (among 26 trucks), and with the modern chassis and drivetrain is intended to be a daily driver if desired,” the ad says.

For such an apparently nicely done custom truck, the asking price seems reasonable at $32,800. And it’s not so extreme that you’d mind driving it just for fun.
