Sneak Peek: 2014 Ram Power Wagon

In place of the 5.7L Hemi, the Power Wagon will now come standard with a 6.4L Hemi V-8 truck engine punching out 410hp and 429 lb-ft of torque. Although similar to the SRT version of the 6.4L, it is a separate engine from what is found in SRT vehicles and does not share all components or calibration. The part numbers, duty cycles and torque curves are different. In fact, there is a third engine program for the 6.4L that is used in the Chassis Cab trucks.

Downstream powertrain changes include a new heavier-duty rear axle. An AAM 11.5-inch replaces the AAM 10.5-inch. The 11.5-inch axle was previously found on diesel HD applications, but is now standard on all Ram 2500 trucks. A new factory selectable locker was designed for the larger axle, but it functions the same as the Power Wagon locker found in the 2013 and earlier models.

With the newfound horsepower and torque under the hood, the 2014 Ram Power Wagon will make a switch to 4.10 axle gears from the 4.56 gears that the axles were previously loaded with. The gear swap to 4.10s is said to improve drivability and fuel economy.

As with all 2014 Ram 2500s, the Power Wagon comes with the new coil-link rear suspension. Ram truck engineers claim to have hit or exceeded capability targets with the new design thanks in part to the use of progressive rate coils. Unfortunately the 2014 Power Wagon will not be available with the air suspension that is optional on the 2500s.

The 2014 Ram 2500 and 3500 both share a three-link (radius arm) front suspension system. However, the Power Wagon design required some additional engineering to maintain off-road capability. The trailing arm has two connection points to the axle (lower and upper). The lower contact point is direct, the upper contact includes an additional link, allowing for more flexibility between the axle and the trailing arm resulting in more front axle articulation.

The 2014 Ram Power Wagon still comes with BFG All-Terrain tires, a Warn 12,000-pound winch, and an electronically disconnecting sway bar, same as before. Max tow rating and cargo capacity have not been announced, we were told there will likely be changes but they will be negligible. Keep your eyes out for a full First Drive review coming soon!

Ram Truck 6.4L vs. 5.7L and 6.4L SRT
FW mag:
Is the Ram Truck 6.4L Hemi basically a 5.7L Hemi with increased bore and stroke?

Ram Truck:
Yes
5.7L - 3.92 x 3.58 (99.5 x 90.9)
6.4L - 4.09 x 3.72(103.9 x 94.6)

FW mag:
What’s different between a 6.4L SRT and a 6.4L for the new Ram?

Ram Truck:
Part number difference – larger components:
Block
Heads
Valves, seats
Cam
Pistons, rings, pin
Rods
Intake and exhaust manifolds
Oil pan
Oil pump
Front cover

FW mag:
What are the differences between a MD 6.4L and a HD 6.4L (Chassis Cab)

Ram Truck:
Due to the duty cycle with the Chassis Cab applications we added sodium cooled exhaust valves, stainless steel exhaust manifolds and upgraded fasteners and gaskets.
