When the qualifying testing is complete, the Amsoil Engine Masters Challenge comes down to just the top five engines. Each one of these competitors earned the right to compete in the finals based on one criteria: delivering engine power. The finalists are run in random order on the same dyno, eliminating any possibility of variation based upon which of the two SuperFlow Powermark dynos at our University of Northwestern Ohio host facility the engines are run on. The run order for 2014 ended up like this: the Gen III Hemi entry from BES Racing – the event’s high qualifier, then the Bradley Built 417 Gen III Hemi, BES’s Chevrolet LS, the School of Automotive Machinists LS, and Kaase’s Boss Nine coming in for the wrap-up.

Under the rules of the 2014 Engine Masters Challenge, a competitor that completes the qualifying dyno session before the 35-minute time limit expires can apply the remaining time to their final elimination round. Some of our finalists strategically banked time, giving them precious extra minutes to extract every bit of power their engine’s had to give.

When Tony Bischoff of BES Racing Engines hit the dyno in the morning, he had more than an hour of run time at his disposal, thanks to the big chunk of time the team banked from qualifying. We didn’t see wild moves for the huge gain in score he achieved, just a steady and methodic tuning session, finding small improvements throughout the session. At the end of it, our top qualifier set a seemingly invincible lead, scoring 3017.4.

One by one, the other finalists entered the dyno, all falling short of the pace set by Bischoff. Oddly, the standing fell in line with the running order, with Bradley’s Hemi taking second place at 2920.9. John Lahone’s BES Racing LS captured third with a 2913.5, followed by the School of Automotive Machinists’ LS at 2904.1, and Jon Kaase Racing’s Boss at fifth position at 2875.4. Bischoff’s Mopar Hemi simply laid waste to all comers, decimating the field with an insurmountable lead. Our congratulations go out to the 2014 “Engine Master” Tony Bischoff and his crew for an incredible showing.
