440 Rods in a 392 ?

Post by Gruntis »

I have just brought Home a 392 which seems to have 440 rods and arias forged slugs ,it seems the forged slugs have a higher pin position which allows the use of the longer 440 rod? This all looks fine , But this engine looks like it was someones project and never finished, Has anybody else seen 440 rods in an early Hemi? What Mods are required Resizing Pin and Big end of rods?

Thanks Gruntis :D

440 rods in a 392 ?

Post by dodgedifferent2 »

If you look at The complete Chrysler HEMI Engine Manual which can be purchased from Tex Smith publishing for $22.95 and it is well worth it

it states that "the 440 rods are .200-inch shorter than the originals and considerably heavie. The difference in length can be compensated for by special pistons, which also need to accept the late 1.090 wrist pins. To provide proper side clearance, the 440 rods will have to be narrowed approximately .020-inch" (pg 23 HEMI ENGINE MANUAL)
This is all that is stated in the manual and i think many people have don the change with the drag racin' HEMI's so it owuld not suprise me if somebody intended to use the 392 in a rail car or something.

I do not know everything about these early HEMI's but i hope this can help a little bit.
