The 5-45RFE 5-speed auto for the 2003 2500s:

1 -- 3.00
2 -- 1.67 upshift, 1.50 kick-down
3 -- 1.00
4 -- 0.78
5 -- 0.67

The same engine and transmission in the 1500,
so I assume they probably kept the same gears.

So the deal is that the transmission has a special passing gear and 4 and 5 are both overdrive ratios. When you depress the OD switch on the gear shift lever it eliminates both 4th and 5 th ?. Wouldn't that actually make it a 6 speed transmisson ?.

Reverse is never counted.
5 speed has 6 gears counting reverse and it is called a 5 speed.
A 6 speed tranny has 7 gears counting reverse, but u never hear of a 7 speed tranny.

How does this work? 2 "second gears"? I was told at the dealer that the "other" second gear counts as the "5th gear". Starting to get confused.

When accelerating (upshifting), it always uses the 1.67 gear.
When downshifting, it will use either 1.50 or 1.67 depending
on throttle position, speed, and determined engine load, for
the best performance.

So it is a 5 speed (1 thru 5) with a choice of 2 second gears. 6 forward gears total. Right?
